Read our 10 simple tips for creating the ultimate luxury bedroom vibe at home

In terms of design and decor, the bedroom often gets overlooked in favor of the larger, showier, and more communal rooms like the kitchen and living room. But if you think it’s a room that doesn’t require much thought, think again. Your bedroom is your sanctuary. A private and intimate space that holds the key to all your sleep and relaxation needs-so it pays to consider the interior design of your room.

If you’re looking to elevate your bedroom into a luxurious space, then turn your attention to the smaller details. While a balance between functionality and comfort is a given in any personal space, for maximum impact, turn your attention to matters like natural light, color scheme, and furniture. Even if you’re redecorating your bedroom on a budget, it’s easy to elevate it by focusing on simple homewares like lighting, bed linen, and other eye-catching details. Often, all it takes is a few key pieces and some vision to transform your space.

From curtains to pillows, here we present our 10 best tips and luxury bedroom ideas for you to steal—and give your bedroom that coveted luxury hotel suite feel.

Linen

Beautiful bed linen is a timeless investment that will not only look and feel great but will ensure you get a better night’s sleep, too. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton and bamboo, and for an extra luxurious vibe, you can’t go past the perennially popular undone look of linen sheets. Up the luxury quotient by sticking to a neutral color palette. Think: white, cream, tan, or even olive and grey.

Cushions and pillows

Nothing makes a room feel like a luxury hotel faster than a range of plush, well-stuffed pillows sitting on the bed. If you prefer a flatter pillow for sleep, source an ottoman with a removable lid or a box for the end of the bed to store excess pillows in. The trick here is having at least two fluffy pillows on each side of the bed, and for real impact, consider adding two European-sized pillows behind them. Bonus points for adding another focal point with smaller decorative or lumbar-style cushions.

Symmetry

The laws of Feng Shui advise this for good reason. Two bedside tables with two lamps and two sets of pillows attracts good, healthy flow of energy for a harmonious relationship but it also looks great. If you’re aiming for a more eclectic contemporary look, each bedside table and lamp doesn’t necessarily have to match—just make sure there are two.

And, just as importantly, if you’re aiming for symmetry don’t overlook your bed placement. Most beds look best centred in the room, with furniture arranged around it to match. This is especially important if you own a statement piece, like a four poster bed.

Curtains

More than just window dressings, well-fitted curtains will elevate any bedroom space, and work perfectly to break up the starkness of a bedroom’s walls and ceiling. So, whether you choose curtains, blinds, or shutters to decorate your bedroom, take the time to have them professionally made to size. Consider getting an extra meter or two added to your curtains width for an extra plush look when pulled to the side.

Lighting

To help ease you into a long, uninterrupted slumber, ideally you should be able to dim the lighting in the bedroom or use bedside lamps to create a cozy ambience before you retire for the night. Lamps are especially important if you like to read before bed—nothing ruins sleep faster than having to get up and turn the light off! Ask any sleep expert, and they’ll agree that adequate wind-down time before bedtime is key for a restful night’s sleep, and part of this is dimmable or soft lighting. Can’t dim your light? Invest in a statement pendant light, which, aside from its practicality, will give your bedroom a more expensive, well-thought-out look.

Rugs

Don’t forget under your feet. A wool or sisal style rug will add texture and comfort to any bedroom, whether it has carpet, floorboards, or tiles. Whether you choose something classic, like a Persian or Moroccan style, or something with more modern designs, a rug adds an interesting counterpoint to any bedroom. It can also give an otherwise minimal or white bedroom an extra layer of color, texture, or pattern to play with.

Entrance

Consider the importance of the lobby of a hotel—often grand and designed to entice, the right entrance creates a welcoming and relaxed feeling from the outset. The entrance to your bedroom should evoke the same feeling. Try standing at the door and notice what you first see. Make sure surfaces aren’t cluttered and have a neat arrangement of decorative and practical objects such as candles, perfume, decorations, and books. And never underestimate the impact of a beautiful piece of art hanging above your bed or a statement bedhead.

Beyond the bed

If you have the space, a comfortable armchair or statement chair will elevate any bedroom into something a bit more special. Choose something elegant but cozy enough to sit on to remove your shoes or to read a book. Again, cushions and a carefully placed throw rug will turn up the level of luxury here.

If you don’t have built-in wardrobes, a beautiful dresser or shelving unit offers both storage and function solutions and can create a strong counterpoint to a bed and armchair. It also serves as a clean surface on which to arrange small decorative pieces, like vases, scented candles, perfume bottles, jewelry boxes, and other knick-knacks.

Breathe life

Flowers and greenery should not be reserved for living and dining spaces only. An orchid or small bunch of beautiful roses will give a room a decadent finish, as well as breathing fresh life and a subtle fragrance into your bedroom. “Have your favourite florist deliver to you a seasonal bunch of fresh flowers every fortnight—this will not only make you feel fabulous but it will add luxury, colour, scent and vibrancy to your interior,” suggests interior designer Sue Axlund of Axlund and Goldstein in Woolooware Bay.

Colour me happy.

As any color therapist or expert will attest, color has the power to evoke a mood, emotion, and personality instantly. That’s why it pays to choose your bedroom paint hue and color scheme carefully. A blue bedroom or a pink bedroom doesn’t just come down to a matter of taste—your bedroom shade can affect everything from how quickly you fall asleep to how easily you wake. Look for soothing colors perfect for relaxation, such as greens, blues, and soft pinks, and try to avoid anything too stimulating or moody, like reds, bright purples, and dark grays. And if all else fails? Bright, light, and neutral is a popular bedroom color scheme in high-end hotels for a reason—it instantly invokes a calm, serene atmosphere.
