In Manhattan, there’s no shortage of lavishly styled apartments filled with dramatic wallpaper, statement features, and ornate finishes. So it’s rare to encounter a client who wants to do away with all the extra accoutrements and focus on something streamlined and minimal instead. But for interior designer Sandra Weingort, simple was the precise design brief for her clients in New York City, a couple with two teenage boys.

In the living room, vintage Pierre Jeanneret lounge chairs from Magen H Gallery, a first edition Eileen Gray lounge chair from Andree Putman’s Ecart International, a custom Celine Cannon coffee table, a custom wall cabinet designed in collaboration with Peter Marigold, Tadanori Tozawa, and Sandra Weingort from Sarah Myerscough Gallery, a Jos Devriendt lamp (on the cabinet) from Pierre Marie Giraud, a Georges Jouve vase from Atelie, and a Nasiri Carpets rug from Nasiri Carpets are

The 3,000-foot apartment may have been finalized with the building in 2018, but as one of the model units, it had been decorated with many additional flourishes and “heavy finishes that were not originally specified by Romualdez,” explains Weingort. “I wanted to bring [the interiors] back to their original, simpler, and more pure state, taking away a lot of the heavy and bold wallcoverings, decorative finishes, and random ‘feature walls’, so that the beautiful original architectural elements could shine through, and the art and furniture collection could be the central focus.” In effect, she needed to go back to the basics.

Comprised of three bedrooms, an office, enclosed kitchen and breakfast room and a living dining area, the owners sought to create spaces that could be multifunctional. “[My clients are] very chic and elegant, [but] also very understated, and open their home to intimate gatherings with family and friends only,” says Weingort. “The living/dining room was meant to be a versatile space that felt sophisticated but discreet when hosting, and could also function as a relaxed family/media room, with a very comfortable and inviting feeling to gather intimately with themselves and their guests.”

Sensing that the newly purchased apartment’s décor was competing with her client’s taste in art and furniture, Weingort spent seven months working with the team at West Village GC to renovate the space and bring everything back down to earth. Aiming for a “blank backdrop” for her client’s art and furniture, she also “added a whole new lighting scheme that was focused on warming up the spaces and lighting the walls meticulously for art.” Referencing her Lower East Side project, Winegort’s clients were looking to her for furniture selection, too. “Naturally, they had their hearts set on vintage mid-century furniture, but they did not own any collectible pieces at the time. They wanted me to build their collection and wanted only timeless, long-lasting classics they felt familiar with and could relate to.”

While it sounds like a fairly straightforward exercise, it was made slightly trickier by Weingort’s living situation. It was May 2020 when she took on the project, and she was living in Miami at the time. “New York was in such an emergency state with COVID, so a huge amount of the work was decided via Zoom and Facetime—something a hands-on designer like myself was originally very uncomfortable (and terrified!) doing,” she recalls. Luckily, technology prevailed. “Thanks to the wonderful collaborative approach of the contractor, West Village GC, I was able to feel like I was visiting the site whenever I wanted and needed. Ultimately, the outcome was not affected whatsoever by the distance.”

The project took a total of 11 months to complete. Weingort was able to procure a number of standout pieces for her client, including those by Martin Eisler and Carlo Hauner, Pierre Jeanneret, Sergio Rodrigues, Serge Mouille, and Geraldo de Barros. She mixed these with commissions by contemporary artists like Peter Marigold, Tadanori Tozawa, Celine Cannon, and Tyler Hays. Not a bad effort for a designer working on Zoom.

Weingort’s work really comes to the fore amid the sea of neutrals and walnut tones in the living and dining area—a self-confessed favourite room. “It’s everyone’s favourite, because it features a beautifully dynamic and understated collection of vintage and contemporary furniture paired with great contemporary art, in a light filled and purely architectural backdrop,” she says proudly. “This makes for a very cosy, comfortable and inviting room, which enables a great environment for relaxation, conversation and a good time.”

The serenity of the space is not lost on the designer, who believes the sense of stillness and peace sets a positive state of mind for its inhabitants. The perfect antidote really, to “living in the craziness of New York City,” she says.
