Scarsdale, in New York’s Westchester County, is predominantly known for two things: firstly, being one of the wealthiest towns in America; and secondly, its Tudor-style architecture, some of which dates back to the 1920s. Yet for interior designer Tamara Magel, working on this Scarsdale project for a young family of five did not involve any reworking of Tudor-esque masonry or wooden beams. Instead, the owner and creative director of her namesake studio had the simple freedom of designing the interiors from scratch. “This house was built from the ground up just before COVID,” she explains. “The young client has great style, so it was easy to work with her on choosing beautiful pieces, fabrics, and marble.”

Moving to the suburbs from New York City gave the owners a chance to expand their family yet remain close to the city for work. It’s this exact balance between suburban space and NYC proximity that makes Scarsdale such an attractive prospect for many New York families. Working closely with her client, Magel had that rare experience with a new build where there were no major issues. “It was a pretty easygoing job,” she recalls of the year and a half it took to construct the home, which was finalized in 2020. “When you’re in sync with your client, things flow. Luckily, the builder was very attentive to details, too.”

Describing the design direction as “elegant, stylish, refined, well-curated, and liveable”, Magel highlights the kitchen as one of the standout spaces. “We used an amazing Paonazzo Calacutta marble, but mixed it with more durable quartzite counters for everyday use.” Coupled with the custom plaster rangehood and ceramic BDDW pendant lights, the kitchen is the picture of textural refinement.

“I also really love the living room,” adds Magel. “The vintage furniture against the timeless Donald Judd art, Rosemary Hallgarten alpaca rug, and fireplace oozes with style and sophistication.” Certainly, when a room contains pieces like Afra and Tobia’s Soriana sofa for Cassina (a piece Magel also placed in her own Hamptons living room), as well as vintage brown suede Knoll chairs from the 1970s, the rest of the design only needs to complement.

Art provides the final piece of the puzzle and comes courtesy of an art consultant hired specially for the project: “Andrea Hazen of Hazen Art Advisory in New York City was engaged to work with us to put together a collection of art that looks gorgeous and timeless in the [home’s] interiors and will set the course for future collecting by the couple.”

Pulling together pieces by Ellsworth Kelly, Donald Judd, Louise Bourgeois, Vera Lutter, Stanley Whitney, and Cecily Brown, Hazen has given the sleek and streamlined home its most unique touch. It comes as no surprise that the owners were more than thrilled to see their new home come together so beautifully.
